The most common type of memory card in use is the Secure Digital (SD) card. To suit the latest smaller and slimmer gadgets, the microSD format was created. With 15 mm × 11 mm × 1 mm dimensions, it is the tiniest memory card in the market. It is an electronic flash memory device used for storing digital information. It is usually used in many electronic devices like mobile phones, digital cameras, laptops, game consoles and MP3 video players. It comes in different capacities, ranging from 32 MB to 64 GB.

The 16gb micro sd card may not have the highest storage capacity but it is enough to store 4,000 songs at 128Kbps or 54,000 2-megapixel photos. This can also store up to 4.5 hours of High Definition (HD) videos. It is definitely a good buy for those on a tight budget.

Transfer speed is essential when dealing with some of the large files people store in high-capacity cards. That speed, along with its stability, makes this particular card worthy of your money. Transfer speeds vary in brand, class and capacity. The 16GB Micro SD card, class 4 ranged from about 4 MB to nearly 5 MB per second transfer rate.

The 256 MB microSD cards had a read speed of 11MB/Sec and a write speed of 5.5MB/Sec. Nearly three years later we have 16GB cards out on the market that have read speeds of 18.3MB/Sec and write speeds of 12.8MB/Sec. It is amazing how far microSD has come in terms of both capacities and speed in recent years.  If you have one of the original 256MB or 512MB microSD cards from 2006, you can nearly double performance by updating to a newer 16gb micro sd card that has a faster speed rating.

In choosing your 16gb micro sd card, pay attention to the details. Its physical appearance, brand, capacity and price make big differences. Don’t just randomly buy any 16gb card that you see. A little research would help. Sandisk just recently produced the 16GB Mobile Ultra microSD. The kind of 16gb micro sd card survives multiple reformats, erasures and rewrites without dying or bricking. The ability to withstand reformatting and rewrites is especially important for high-capacity cards so you can get your money’s worth. You do not want to spend on something that you will regret sooner. This Ultra microSD works with every device including a music player, cell phone and even with a Play Station Portable PSP (via a third-party Memory Stick Pro Duo adapter).
